Starter activity
1. Individual activity:
Ask children to count how many teeth they have.
2. Individual Activity:
Can the children tell how many different types of teeth they have?
Main activity
Class Activity:
Watch film: 'animal teeth' showing the range of teeth in the animal kingdom.
2. Teaching Point:
Introduce the concept that the type of teeth an animal has is linked to its diet eg carnivore needs teeth to rip, herbivore needs teeth to grind, etc.
3. Group Activity:
Study picture sheet of teeth and jaws. Can the children match the teeth to the foodstuff? Share results with class.
4. Class Activity:
Watch Powerpoint: 'different types of teeth and their functions'.
5. Class Activity/Discussion:
Show the children a set of human dentures. What types of tooth can they identify? How does human diet account for the layout of human teeth?
6. Class Activity:
Watch film: 'jaw line and tooth size' about jawline adaptation and the problems it can cause. Do the children agree with the theory in the film?
Plenary activity
Q: Which type of teeth can a human being least do without?
