Starter activity

1. Group Discussion: 'Why do we brush our teeth?'

 

Main activities

Class Activity:

Watch Powerpoint: 'structure of the tooth'.

 

Individual activity:

Children draw an annotated diagram of a tooth (from final Powerpoint slide).

 

Class discussion:

What factors do they think can affect the health of a tooth and gums?

 

Group Activity:

Match the positive and negative causes and effects on tooth and gum health.

 

Class Activity:

Watch Powerpoint: 'the process of dental decay'.

 

Class Activity:

Discuss actual and best practice dental habits.

 

Teaching Point:

Explain how fluoride is added to toothpaste and water supply to help strengthen teeth.

 

Group activity:

Set up an experiment to illustrate how enamel can be worn away.

 

Plenary activity

Class Activity:

Set up 'hot Seat'. Children take turns to be the dental hygienist. 'Patient' children describe their problems and hygienist offers solution. Discuss information given.
