By the end of this lesson pupils should:

Starter activity 

1. Class Activity:

Watch Powerpoint: 'environments around the world'.

 

2. Teaching Point/Class Discussion:

Introduce concept of positive and negative impacts on the environment.

Children discuss how these might apply to the images they have seen.

 

Main activities 

1. Group Activity:

Revisit documentation from Lesson 3 & 4 Field Study. What positive and negative human impact on organisms in their studied habitat can the children infer?

 

2. Class activity:

Share conclusions. Compile a list of ways that the children might be able to have a positive impact on flora and fauna in their local environment.

 

3. Paired Activity:

Choose one thing from the above, e.g. 'not littering', 'putting out bird seed in winter'. Design a poster encouraging peers to carry out this activity.

 

4. Class Discussion:

What changes would children make to their school grounds to make them more wildlife friendly?

(These ideas could be pursued further as a continuing project, eg through the School Council)

 

Plenary activity 

Q: What will happen if we do not protect wildlife habitats?
