Vocabulary

Starter activity 

1. Class Activity:

Watch Powerpoint: 'man and his fellow animals'.

 

Main activities

1. Class Activity:

Compile a list of different ways man's activities impact on other animals.

 

2. Class Activity:

Watch Powerpoint: 'the Amazon village' (dividing children into groups as explained at start of Powerpoint).

Run debates at appropriate times as they arise in the Powerpoint.

 

3. Teaching Point/Discussion:

Introduce the principle of 'net benefit' (i.e. the principle that the best decision may not be wholly good for all parties). 

 

4. Class Discussion:

Children discuss where the principle of 'net benefit' might have applied in their Powerpoint debates above.

 

5. Teaching Point:

Introduce the concept that man's power gives him responsibility as custodian of the environment.

 

6. Group activity:

Play the Conservation Game. (Available as a free download here)

 

Plenary activity 

Q: What is the single most important thing mankind could start doing or stop doing to protect the environment?
