What is blood made of?
Main activities
1. Teaching Point:
Explain that the dual function of the circulatory system is (a) to deliver oxygenated blood to all parts of the body and (b) to carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
2. Class Activity:
Watch Videoscribe: 'the circulatory system'. Do the children agree with the supermarket analogy?
3. Individual Activity:
Children label diagram of the circulatory system, colouring red to show the path of oxygenated blood and blue the path of deoxygenated blood.
4. Teaching Point:
Explain that blood is not just a single red liquid but comprises several main components:

Plasma

Red blood cells (erythrocytes)

White blood cells (lymphocytes) and platelets
5. Group Activity:
Children follow instruction recipe to concoct their own blood.
6. Class Activity:
Using red and blue counters, children create drama to demonstrate the flow of blood to and from the heart.
