You provide:

  • Stopwatches to record pulse

 

Vocabulary

pulse, respiration, heart-rate, muscles

 

Starter activity 

1. Paired Activity:

Effect of exercise on heart rate.

  1. Children take each other's pulse in wrist (Count how many beats in 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to find bpm) and record.

  2. Exercise energetically for 1 minute.

  3. Retake pulse and record.

  4. Rest for 1 minute.

  5. Retake pulse and record.

Share results.

 

Main activities 

1. Class Discussion:

What happens to the body during exercise? Answers should include:

  • increased pulse rate

  • more rapid breathing

  • increased heat – redness and thirst

 

2. Class Activity:

Listen to sound clip of heart rate increasing.

 

3. Teaching Point:

Connect what is happening physiologically inside the body to give these effects outside the body.

 

4. Class Activity:

Watch Videoscribe: 'the role of blood during exercise'.

 

4. Class Activity:

Children conduct a class survey about what forms of exercise are done by members of the class.

 

5: Individual Activity:

Each child draws a graph to illustrate the results of the survey.

 

Plenary activity 

Q: What happens when somebody doesn’t exercise the body over a long period of time?
